Safe Work Practice 10’ Truss

In response to a May 2024  incident on site, the following safe work practice is recommended for 10’ Truss dollies.

Key Points

1. Do not dismiss another worker’s safety concerns.
2. Use 8-wheel dollies for 10’ truss
3. Center the truss on the dolly when stacking
4. Strap the stack twice before loading it onto the truck

Context

1. 8-wheel dollies and double straps can mitigate the dolly falling off the back of the liftgate.
   o A 10’ stack is so long it must be lifted on the gate sideways.
   o When turning the stack, over 2’ of truss must hang off the end of the liftgate.
   o If the dolly only has 4 wheels, the stack may fall.
   o If there is only 1 strap, the stack may shift.
   o If the stack is centred on the dolly, the dolly is less likely to tip over.

2. When anyone says stop (10’ truss or otherwise)
o stop immediately and tell others to stop LOUDLY
o Address any immediate danger
o Facilitate a civil group discussion where all involved in the task agree on how to proceed safely, before resuming the task.
o Do NOT
 Dismiss any person’s safety concerns. Under any circumstances, or for any reason.
 Continue using the practice that triggered the unsafe work refusal without addressing the underlying concern.
 Be hasty or in a rush. Nothing we do should be a life-safety emergency.
